GET TO KNOW DANIELLE D.I

Picture
Danielle D.I. like the soothing tropical climate of the island on which she was born, radiates conta- gious warmth. Her petite frame, intense eyes and childish grin add to her appeal. Born and raised a stone’s throw away from the home of the legendary Bob Marley, she is determined to follow in his footsteps as an ambassador for her homeland.
Her relationship with music dates back to St. Andrew High. She was a student who hungrily gobbled up the popu- lar music at that time. Listening to the racy rants of 'Patra', 'LadySaw', and the boastful lyrical bites of 'Beenie Man' among other leading acts. The sounds of Hip Hop, and R&B were equally close to her heart, through Rappers 'Lil Kim', 'Jay-Z' and 'Foxy Brown'. She developed songwriting skills as an adolescent, while studying in the U.S. Her love and passion for reggae music led to return to her island home to begin her musical quest of being a recording artiste.
She proceeded with the launch of her first release, “Turn him on” which she co-produced. The saucy track featured prolific songwriter and dancehall sensation, 'Ce’Cile'. The accompanying music video swiftly garnered high rotation on local / Caribbean TV stations. Danielle D.I. was now established as the hot newcomer on the dancehall reggae scene. Her charm, passion and drive soon landed her a track with 'Gramps Morgan' of the group 'Morgan Heritage' in addition to dancehall icon, 'Beenie Man'. It was a great achievement to collaborate with Beenie on the upbeat song, “Brown girl in the ring”.
Her demand grew and soon Birchill records sought her, to produce “Downtown Man”. This release dismissed all qualms suggesting an amateur status. She officially moved up the ranks, performing on major festivals such as: 'Reggae Sumfest' and 'Sunsplash' as well as the greatest one reggae show on earth, 'Sting'. Her next big hit came through DJ Karim with “Beat it”. This track established her as a force to be reckoned with. The infectious track brought Danielle D.I. great demand outside of her country with shows in Chicago, New York, Trinidad and London among other destinations. Infamous dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel fell for the monster hit, “Beat it”. He offered a remix and pursued to make it a reality. When Danielle D.I. heard the lyrics Kartel laid down, she was immensely impressed with his wit and genius. She later allied with Truck Back Records to acquire the incredibly successful and controversial recording, “Man weh mi nuh want”. A brazen dancehall track launching lyrics blows at female artiste D’Angel.
To achieve her goal Danielle D.I. has partnered with a robust team headed by Keona Williams alongside Sly & Robbie. In June 2013 she released her debut album, The Rebel with Taxi Records and One Pop Music. The album’s lead single features Cherine Anderson. The single has been recognized as a "ladies’ anthem”. The Rebel has been racking up rave reviews for the single 'Big Man', which features Grammy winning veteran Shabba Ranks. Her latest release, “My Man” is steadily gaining popularity with it’s much talked about sexually appealing music video. The song was a favorite on the Sex Love and Reggae tour. The management team of International reggae star, Gyptian invited Danielle D.I. to appear as an opening act for the successful tour. Today Danielle D.I. has her sights set on international stardom and is working steadfastly to make the reggae music fraternity proud.

Cherine Anderson is a triple threat: singer, songwriter and acclaimed Jamaican actress, having starred in two of Jamaica’s most successful films, Dancehall Queen (1997) and One Love (2003).

Cherine has been focusing her attention on writing music and collaborating with industry giants like Sly and Robbie, David Norland (Madonna, Dallas Austin), JeekyMan (Lil Kim), as well as prominent Jamaican producer Christopher Birch (Shaggy). She collaborated on remixes with Wyclef Jean and ex-Beatle member Paul McCartney. Reggae and urban radio stations have already fallen for the sweet voice spilling from their systems courtesy of her debut hit single “Good Love”. Cherine quickly followed “Good Love” with a lover’s rock duet with Chuck Fender which quickly topped both the singles and the video charts in Jamaica. Cherine’s latest release, “Kingston State of Mind”, provides her perspective on the realities of the environment in Kingston and illustrates the songwriting depth that lies in this young artist. Cherine also took on the challenge of directing the music video for “Kingston State of Mind.

Born in Rockfort in East Kingston, Jamaica, her parents Derryck & Barbara Anderson kept Cherine and her two older sisters in Sunday school and any other church activity that would keep them off the unstable streets. It was in church that her musical talent was discovered. At the age of 12, she became a touring member of Ashe Performing Arts Ensemble, and received professional training in dance, music and theatre. In 2003, Cherine combined her two loves, singing and acting, starring in the film One Love. Her voice lent two heartfelt songs to the film’s soundtrack, and her acting talent earned her the MTV2/Urbanworld Film Festival Award for best actress in a feature film.

In August, 2007, Cherine took to the road with Sly and Robbie & the Taxi Gang; not as an opening act, but as the featured vocalist on the 15 date tour.

Tanya Stephens (born Vivienne Stephenson on July 2, 1973) was one of the most promising female reggae artists to emerge in the late '90s. Stephens caught her big break in 1996, when her ladies anthem, "Yuh Nuh Ready fi Dis Yet," caused quite a stir (later spotlighted on the Reggae Gold 1997 compilation), as she soon after began working with such acclaimed producers as Barry O'Hare, Bobby "Digital" Dixon, Harvel "Gadaffi" Hart, and Dave and Tony Kelly. Future singles followed, including "Draw fi Mi Finger," "Freaky Type," and "Cry and Bawl," as well as the full-length releases Too Hype in 1997 and Ruff Rider a year later (Stephens also contributed backing vocals on Garnett Silk's 1998 release Journey). She then moved to Sweden and began recording a series of alternative rock tracks. Unhappy with her new direction, she returned to reggae in 2004 with Gangsta Blues and its big hit single "Boom Wuk." The ambitious Rebelution appeared in 2006 with female empowerment as its focus.

Born Ryan Douglas, this dancehall young blood grew up in Bucks Avenue where he attended Denbigh Primary and Denbigh High School. He developed a love for music during his teenage years, and that love burns still.

"Nobody in the family does music, I used to go to church when I was younger, but I was never on the choir, but I used to do the best desk thing and tighten my rhymes till I began to understand music more," the 23-year-old deejay said.

wild imagination

Once he left school, he continued to work on his craft, constructing songs in his head and writing them down in ledger books. "Right now, mi have one big old ledger book that is full, and another is half full. Mi have a wild imagination, mi write about a wide variety of things," he said.

He got his first break at 16 when he performed at a dancehall stage show in Western Park in May Pen. He did a catchy song called Nitty Gritty that earned one of the biggest ovations of the night, and based on that performance, he began to attract a solid underground following.

He continued to hone his craft, dropping his rhymes on a variety of beats, hip-hop beats, grimy dancehall beats, and even classic one-drop and rocksteady beats.

Now that he has inked a management and production deal with Faada Bulla of Dutty Fridaze Promotion, he can start to record some of those songs sprinting around in his brain.

"Right now, ah straight to the top mi ah go, Faada Bulla ah help me accomplish my dreams, and mi want the world to hear what I have to say," he said.

Gage has just released a new track "Gaza Defender" on the Tuff Wi Tuff Riddim produced by Ajang Music. Hismanagement team at Dutty Fridaze Promotion has just joined forces with PR/Booking Agent Lesley Hayles at LesleyOdyssey Entertainment to help catapult Gage to the next level.

If ever there was a pen and a pad to describe Khalilah, it would tell astory of an artist so deep in her own thoughts of other people's struggle.Khalilah is a conscious spirit whose music brings about awareness of theworld around her. Inspired as a young child her journey as a song writerbegan at the age of 12. Her voice would travel through her home and soon herwhole family would be her original fan base, watching her as she would puton musicals to entertain the elders. Khalilah has performed in New York Cityand has also traveled back to her roots to perform in Jamaica. Her debutsingle "No Gunz," produced by Carl James on the “Deeper Riddim,” is making agreat impression in the industry today for its meaningful lyrics. "No Guns"relays the unfortunate story of many who have lost their loved ones toviolent deaths. It also takes a political stand while asking the question, how all those guns got in the ghetto.
Currently backed by High Noon Band she is colorful and fluid as her tastefor music does not only span the reggae scene, but reaches acrossboundaries. Currently penning her album, her credentials are broadening asthe executive producer for various tracks. She has worked with notableproducers, House of Riddim, Carl James, Bobby Digital, Phillip Smart, FifthElement Records and has had the opportunity to perform in venues withCapelton, Luciano, Gyptian, India Irie, Etana, Yami Bolo and more.
Not only has a singer, Khalilah worked as the host for Forever ReggaeTelevision in which she interviews various artists within the reggaeindustry. Khalilah also works as a teacher for children with special needsand a support staff worker in a local homeless shelter.
Her earthiness and sparkling personality has won over the hearts ofdirectors, radio personality, producers and fans alike. This songstressrepresents a strong history of women walking in light, learning in love andstanding up for what is righteous. Khalilah represents the truth.

Trinidad Soca Artist Buff

Buffy rises to Stardom! How many times have we heard the same complaints about Soca and Soca performers? Everybody sounds the same, the same artists every year, no room for new talent are some of those complaints. In what seems to be a response to the more discerning fan and maybe because of the absence of some of the more well known talents, Many young new and exciting performers have stepped up to the plate. Leading the pack of 'newbies' is the female phenomenon who goes by the name Buffy. Not that she does not deserve the immense popularity she is experiencing this year with her chart topping hits, but as they say success comes when opportunity comes knocking on talents' door. This year Buffy has answered the call in style!

Chrystal Cuffy carries the sobriquet 'Buffy'; a 23 year old wife, mother, recording and performing artiste who hails originally from Couva but currently resides in Claxton Bay. Buffy first recognized her ability to sing while attending Couva Anglican Primary. Now, some fifteen plus years later she is living her dream, which at one point seemed to be turning into a nightmare.

When Buffy released her first song for Carnival 2k9 it received very little airplay on radio stations in Trinidad and Tobago enough to dampen the spirits of even the more experienced bards. She however saw the set back as motivation to continue pursuing her goals. Now that she has three songs receiving tremendous airplay, she is happy she did not give up the struggle. Her track 'Buffy & Thick' which was released for Carnival 2k9 is motivation for the girls with a little bit extra on the side 'the thick sweet and sexy gyal dem!' where she tells the less fluffy girls not to hate on the 'girls that buff' and encourages the girls with a little more meat on their bones to be more confident, like she certainly is... 'Buffy & Thick'!!!

Her second song 'Anything' is about pure waist movements, bacchanal and freedom in a soca dance where as she says: "Man wining on anything...woman wining on anything" She continues to bring a new urban flavour to Soca, with great crossover appeal to the Soca fraternity. Her final offering for the carnival season; 'All Night' is a Groovy collaboration with Soca artiste Rocky that has flavourings of dancehall, while still maintaining that carnival frenzy. Not your average wining song it plays like a drama showing our ability to transform into party insomniacs every year.

Buffy did not jump directly into the Soca game. It was not till after obtaining her CXC passes and gaining both Accounting (School of Practical Accounting) and Business Management Qualifications (University of the West Indies); that she decided to pursue her passion seriously. Chrystal says "I decided to use my talent to create a career for myself. I always wanted to be independent and do my own thing…and be successful!" However things did not go as smoothly as she imagined though.

The death of her dear friend and producer, Akim Farmer, brought her early efforts to an abrupt end. When he died in a vehicular the pain Buffy felt was unexplainable and part of her as well as her passion for music went with him. It was at this time that Buffy decided to abandon all plans of becoming an artiste. It was the persuasion of her husband that fuelled her enthusiasm again; the results we see today.

Some say that Buffy sounds a lot like a mix between Dancehall DeeJaying and bacchanal Soca mash up! She admits "The dancehall flavour in my music comes from my early love of that style of music. The vocal flow and the roughness of lady Saw was a strong influence"Buffy maintains though that "even though that was my initial vibes I am 100% Trini and I respect and admire all the ladies who represent from Rose to Fay-Ann to Destra and especially Saucy Wow!" Buffy promises that we would hear a lot more of her unique style of soca, as well as Dancehall and reggae tracks as soon as the smoke clears from Carnival 2k10.

Buffy has been performing in all the major events for Carnival 2k14and hopes to continue flying the Soca Flag high locally, regionally and internationally in the future.

TRINIDAD's soca queen  Patrice Roberts…

It was in 2005 when the world heard her voice alongside that of Bunji Garlin. Speedily the question of who she was circled the Caribbean entertainment industry, with only a few being able to provide an accurate answer. It was her refreshingly soothing and powerful vocals that quickly got her the attention that many established entertainers would have desired years before her name popped up. Now, fondly referred to by her close friends and family as Patsy, Patrice Roberts has assumed her position in the Caribbean music industry as a force to be reckoned with.

Music was always an instrumental part of her life and would inevitably become her career. As far as her mind allows her to journey Patrice recollects always being in love with music and singing. It was at the tender age of seven that the songstress would take her talent seriously with the support of her family, “Singing and performing was all that I knew and love and I knew it was going to consume my entire life.” said Roberts. Since then Patrice has not regretted surrendering to her passion.

In 2006, shortly after Patrice shot into the spotlight she became one of the frontline vocalists and the only female member of the internationally recognized Soca Band, which at that time was known as Xtatik (now HD). For Patrice her professional career had just begun and she was in full flight. It would be a challenging and difficult journey for Patrice but one that she would embrace and make her own when given the opportunity.

Fresh out of school, Roberts experienced what many would consider “culture shock”; moving from her countryside dwellings in Toco to city lights. Her transition from a calypso consumed lifestyle to Soca meant that the life she was accepting would attract obstacles beyond her understanding, “I had to adapt to the culture, the atmosphere and now compete with established artistes.”

Prior to her collaboration with Bunji Garlin and her alliance with Machel Montano and HD Patrice had numerous Calypso accolades under her belt. How was she able to move from her Calypso days to current day Patrice? Who created “this” Patrice Roberts? The answer – “Kernal Roberts created Patrice Roberts” said Patrice. She explained how this occurrence took place “Dan Nero and George Stanisclaus were moulding my career in calypso and Kernal was with Traffik at that time…they approached Kernal to write a song that would introduce me to the Soca world” shared Patsy. “The Islands” was birthed by Kernal, “He teamed me up with Bunji and we created a hit that was accepted by the masses.” From then Kernal Roberts, son of legendary Calypsonian Kitchener became her biggest supporter and; everywhere he went he took Patrice with him.

One of her greatest achievements soon followed, Roberts was named the youngest female Road March winner for her collaboration with Machel Montano titled “Band Of The Year”. This achievement would solidify her existence in the Soca world and prove to critics that she was more talent than they expected. She continued to motivate herself; working on her craft to meet the industry standards as well as the standards of her band mates; “To match the standards was hard…I was intimidated, I faced periods of frustration but I pushed myself until I got the hang of it” she admitted.

The young, talented and sexy songbird/songwriter is very passionate about her craft; to her it is no joking matter. Her talent has provided her with opportunities to travel extensively throughout the Caribbean, United States of America and the United Kingdom with more opportunities still presenting themselves; her impressions are always positively long lasting. To understand her career one must understand her struggle, obstacles and success, a simple word of advice from Patsy to anyone interested in following their dreams is, “The sky is the limit…never give up and keep on pushing even though you are not seeing progress now you would see it.” She adds “You will have pain, there will be mixed emotions but always remember to put God first and believe in your dream.”

To date Roberts has been recognized for some of her hit singles namely, “A Little Wine”, “Bruk Out”, “I am Soca”, “Tempa Wine”, “Sugar Boy”, “Wukkin Up”, “Rollin” and “Single to Mingle”. She has collaborated with talents such as Kerwin Du Bois, Swappi, Tian Winter, Macka Diamond, Zan among others. Roberts lists some of her influences to be Machel Montano, Kernal Roberts, Elizabeth Montano, Lady B, Verline Bobb, Dwain Antrobous, Danbers Nero, George Stanisclaus and Shawn “Roots” Mitchell.
